The department provides specialised preservation and conservation services for works of art and historic items.

Through Artlab Australia, the department is responsible for the conservation programs of the state’s extensive collections in Adelaide, including for the Art Gallery of South Australia, South Australian Museum and State Library of South Australia.

Artlab also provides conservation services for a corporate clientele, community collections and private clients within Australia and overseas.

A team of qualified conservators carries out expert and skilled conservation treatment of art and historical items, including paintings, books, photographs, textiles, sculptures, monuments and a broad range of three-dimensional objects.

Artlab also offers expert advice on preventive conservation and care of heritage collections including disaster preparedness and disaster response to recover cultural objects affected by flood, fire, earthquake or vandalism.
