Phase 5 of the D3 journey, judging the team pitches

The business concepts developed by competitors will be judged at the Pitch Night. At this event, competitors will pitch their start-up business concept to a panel of judges for a chance to be awarded seed funding to further develop their business concepts. Members of the judging panel are announced at the Day 2 workshop.

Objectives of Pitch Night

The objectives of the event are to:

  1. Allow competitors to pitch their start-up business concept to a panel of judges.
  2. Award competitors for their business concept(s).
  • High potential Start-up Award – for the competitors awarded seed funds to further validate their business concept(s).
  • People’s Choice Award – for the most popular concept voted by the people attending the event (optional).
  • Customer Development Process Award – for the competitors who best embraced the D3 Digital Challenge process (optional).

Preparing a Pitch Brief for the Pitch Night

In lead up to the Pitch Night, competitors are required to submit a Pitch Brief.

The Pitch Brief:

  • outlines the competitor’s business concept
  • demonstrates what problem or part the problem the business concept solves
  • shows how the competitors intend to approach the initial 4-6 week Validating the business concept phase.

Pitch briefs must be ready before the judges meet for their pitch pre-briefing. The Validating the business concept phase commences after the Pitch Night.

How to run the Pitch Night

On Pitch Night teams are given five minutes to present their pitch. Additional time is allowed for judges to ask questions.

After the delivery of all pitches, the judging panel will go into a separate room to deliberate and select the winning business concept(s).

An event running sheet is critical for the smooth running of the event and should be shared with judges/special guests (e.g. if a Minister is coming to present the awards).

Trophies for award winners and certificates of participation are desirable and should be issued to the competitors on the night.

Selecting the judges

An effective judging process is critical to a successful challenge outcome. It is important to select the right judges with the right blend of skills and experience.  See the Judges section on the Get Involved page for information on the skills your judges should have to be included on your panel.

Judges Pre-Pitch Briefing

As challenge owner providing support and guidance to the judges is essential. Organise a briefing session prior to the Pitch Night where you can share more about the challenge process and clarify what is expected of them.

Prepare the judges Pre-Pitch agenda:

  • Welcome and introductions
  • Panel selection and expertise
  • Overview of the Challenge Brief
  • Overview of the workshop sessions and the competitor's journey
  • Judging process and criteria
  • Overview of the Pitch Night program.

Judges information pack

Prior to Pitch Night, develop an information pack for the judges.

The pack should include:

  • Design Brief
  • Target group
  • Vision of success
  • Judging criteria
  • Further funding information
  • Pitch Night program
  • Judges biographies
  • Pitch brief documents (in order of presentation)
  • Score sheet and judging guidelines.

Judging on the night

Judges will score each team using a scoring table.

After teams have pitched their business concept:

  • provide a room or private space for judges to deliberate in (1 hour)
  • allow participants and guests to break for light refreshments
  • organise light entertainment or a relevant presentation while the judges make their decision (at the challenge owner's discretion).

Winners should be announced at Pitch Night and on social media shortly after the event.
