An important milestone has been reached with South Australia’s COVID-SAfe Check-in app recording its 300 millionth check in.
The COVID-SAfe Check-in app has proved to be a vital tool to identify and trace any known outbreak of COVID-19 in the community.
This month, South Australia reached the milestone of more than 300 million check-ins via QR codes with the 300 millionth check-in occurring at 5:35pm on Friday 6 August.
The Department of the Premier and Cabinet’s (DPC) ICT and Digital Government team developed the COVID SAfe QR check-in app and the Office for Data Analytics manages the data it gathers and provides this to SA Health when required. This important tool enables contact tracers to rapidly perform risk assessments, identify and contact individuals – within minutes.
Chief Executive of DPC, Nick Reade, acknowledged the app’s critical role in ensuring as little disruption as possible to South Australians during the global pandemic.
“The QR code system plays an important role in the easing of restrictions after an outbreak in our state, and all South Australians should be proud of their efforts in using the app as an everyday defence tool in the fight against COVID-19,” Mr Reade said.
“Data collected during South Australia’s recent seven-day lockdown showed a distinct drop in the level of check-in activity as people stayed in their homes. Encouragingly, when the lockdown was lifted, the number of check-ins increased significantly from pre-lockdown levels. This reflected our community’s diligence and renewed focus on using the app in our fight against the pandemic.”
“With the emergence of the highly transmissible Delta variant, the importance of checking in with the app is even more crucial.”
“Our community understands this, as seen by the 14 million check-ins over the last week alone, showing the trust South Australians have in the technology and its management as part of our state’s defence against COVID-19,” he said.
A new check-box feature has recently been introduced on the check-in app to raise awareness around the importance of getting vaccinated. If checked, this one-time prompt sends an SMS with a link to the Commonwealth’s vaccination site once the check-in is completed.
DPC keeps a running tally of daily counts of check-ins, unique locations and unique mobile numbers used for QR code scanning for the COVID SAfe check-in program, and a cumulative count of record deletions on the Data SA website.
