Congratulations to Dr Roger Thomas, for being awarded the NAIDOC Lifetime Achievement Award as part of the 2021 NAIDOC South Australian Awards.
A proud Kokatha man and respected South Australian Aboriginal Elder, Dr Thomas is the current serving South Australian Commissioner for Aboriginal Engagement.
As Commissioner, he provides Aboriginal leadership across South Australia, advocating on behalf of all Aboriginal people and communities. Dr Thomas investigates and advises on barriers to Aboriginal people’s access and full participation in government, non-government and private services.
In December 2020, Dr Thomas gave an historic address to the House of Assembly, South Australian Parliament where he presented the bi-annual ‘Report of the South Australian Commissioner for Aboriginal Engagement’.
Dr Thomas has held various positions on state, national and international advisory committees working on strategic initiatives and has presented numerous papers at conferences and forums nationally and internationally.
He was the inaugural Professor of Indigenous Engagement and Adjunct Professor of Education at the University of Adelaide and the Dean of the Centre for Australian Indigenous Research and Studies, Wilto Yerlo.
